The Member of Parliament for Eastleigh and Youth Minister, Mims Davies, joined around 70 students and staff at an open invitation Question & Answer session at Barton Peveril College last week. Hosted by politics teacher Jan Vass, the MP for Eastleigh, who is also the Youth Minister, gave an overview of her role as the local MP, as well as covering her Ministerial Portfolio on sport, loneliness, young people and charities, before taking questions from the floor.
Commenting afterwards, Eastleigh MP Mims Davies said:
“It was great to again return to Barton Peveril for a grilling by local students on a whole range of topics from votes at 16 to sport, exercise, local services, education costs, future job opportunities and MUCH more!
“As Eastleigh’s MP – and a Mum! - I’ve always taken a keen interest in the issues that matter most to our young people. All too often it’s said that our young people don’t care about their futures, but this couldn’t be further from the truth, as was demonstrated by the full room of passionate students that I met with last week.
“My thanks to Barton Peveril Principal Jonathan Prest and politics teacher Jan Vass for inviting me along, and for all of the work that they do to inspire their students!”
Also commenting, Barton Peveril Principal Jonathan Prest said:
“I am confident that if all MPs could engage with sixth formers as warmly and with such direct honesty as Mims did last week, interest in politics amongst the soon-to-be voters generation would blossom. Mims even managed to get away with explaining why she would not, at present, argue for a lowering of the voting age! Thank you, a great Q and A!"
