Further funding for renewable energy

Wind Farms

I was pleased to see my colleagues in DEFRA kick off this week by announcing we are launching our biggest-ever round of our flagship renewable energy scheme, Contracts for Difference, backed by an additional £265 million to encourage investment in low-carbon electricity, with £200 million to support offshore wind projects, as well as £55 million for supporting emerging renewable technologies and creating well-paid highly skilled jobs in our former industrial heartlands.

This scheme is open to projects operating across the UK, and the additional offshore wind capacity resulting from the funding alone could power around 8 million homes. For the first time since 2015, established technologies, including onshore wind and solar, will also be able to bid.

Off the back of recent funding boosts in the area, I believe this is another positive step in our green recovery, and I hope this again demonstrates to constituents this Government's determination to change the narrative around green policy. We are backing up our words with actions, and making world-leading decisions to save our environment and tackle climate change.

Additionally, updated guidance is also being published for onshore wind projects in England, to ensure local communities are given a more effective voice on local development.
