Eastleigh MP Mims Davies has finished her role scrutinising the Government’s Immigration Bill during its Parliamentary committee stage.
The four-week examination has looked at the legislation which Mims said will make immigration law fairer and clearer.
Key areas include a provision, in some cases, to deport asylum seekers and then investigate their claim, and not allow them leave to stay in the UK while the case is concluded.
There has been a problem with students studying in the UK for several years before claiming asylum at the end of their course to avoid going home, which is unfair and costs the taxpayer.
“Immigration is the number one issue on the doorstep in Eastleigh and the Government is right to try and do more to make the system fairer for those who genuinely need asylum, while making it clearer why people cannot stay," said Mims.
“This was my first ever bill committee and it was a great learning experience to hear evidence from such a broad range of people and see first hand the process of making law.
“The bill, with the amendments from the committee now included, will now go back to the Commons for its third reading.”
