Mims Davies MP raises awareness for Endometriosis Action Month
Mims was pleased to join Endometriosis UK in Parliament to discuss the wait times for diagnosis of endometriosis where around 1.5 million women in the UK are currently living with endometriosis. Its crucial we work together to raise awareness and fight for further support, help, and treatment.
New data released by Endometriosis UK this week revealed that the average time to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis in the UK has now reached 9 years and 4 months. Alarmingly, this figure has increased from an average of 8 years reported in 2020
The findings, from a survey by Endometriosis UK, highlight the struggles of individuals seeking diagnosis and management to help reduce the severity of symptoms: 39% of respondents reported needing to visit their GP 10 times or more before endometriosis was suspected. Additionally, 55% of respondents attended A&E with their symptoms, but 46% of these were sent home without treatment
Endometriosis is a long-term (chronic) condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body. It's common, affecting around 1 in 10 women. Symptoms vary from person to person and can be severe and debilitating.
Mims would like to encourage residents to know the common symptoms to look out for, including;
- pelvic pain
- painful periods that interfere with everyday life
- heavy menstrual bleeding
- pain during or after sex
Mims Davies MP said:
This month is Endometriosis Action Month - around 1.5 million women in the UK are currently living with the pain and agony of Endometriosis.
The time it takes for diagnosis takes far too long and it is only getting worse.
Women’s concerns and symptoms often get dismissed as just “painful periods” and their health and wellbeing is ignored. As the Shadow Minister for Women, I believe it is absolutely crucial we raise awareness and improve care and treatment for women.
Endometriosis is preventing 1 in 10 women from having a normal and a good quality of life - interrupting their work and personal life.
That is why I am supporting Endometriosis action month and calling to reduce the average time for diagnosis.
