Mims Davies MP raises scrapping Stamp Duty for Younger Generations on BBC Politics South East
As a mother of 2, Mims has always made it clear that as an MP one of her goals is to ensure our younger generations voices are heard and they're given opportunities to help their future.
Mims was formally the Minister for Social Mobility, Youth and Progression and whilst in the role hosted a special visit for a group of young people who took part in the Kickstart Scheme at the Houses of Parliament.
Mims said that Kickstart helped thousands of young people progress and get on the career ladder and she was incredibly proud of the Scheme’s success and the individual achievements it paved the way for. Mims believes new routes to work are created when government and employers join up, as demonstrated by Clarion directly employing over 100 Kickstarters. This shining example shows how investing in our young people – boosting their skills and confidence – sets up individuals, as well as business, for lasting success.
As an MP and former Minister, Mims has also spent a lot of her time promoting apprenticeships and skills training instead of what she describes as “debt-trap” university courses. Supporting proposals for more apprenticeship funding, incentives for employers hiring young apprentices, and savings schemes for people entering their first jobs.
Whilst helping people get onto the property ladder and into jobs and apprenticeships, Mims has also been a huge advocate for stronger mental health support for children and young people, including family Hubs, Mental Health Support Teams in schools, CAMHS expansion, and early intervention hubs for ages 11–25.
Mims Davies MP said:
Our young people need to be heard, understood, and provided with opportunities to boost their future.
Labour need to stop talking and take action on our borders, The Welfare Bill, scrap Stamp Duty, and give our younger generations the opportunities they need.
Scrapping stamp duty would make it easier for our younger people in EGU and beyond to get onto the property ladder by reducing the huge upfront costs they're confronted with when buying a home.
This could help first-time buyers save money, move out earlier, and make home ownership more achievable at a time when house prices and rents are already high.
I was pleased to join BBC Politics South East raising constituents concerns and looking forward to joining again this week - be sure to tune in!
