Mims Davies MP writes to the Minister responsible for the Cadets advocating for the many Sussex cadets who have been roundly displaced from their home base - the Crowborough Army Camp - by the Home Office decision to house hundreds of single male asylum seekers there instead. Despite repeated assurances from the Home Office that this would be for only 12 months, the Cadet Forces have now been informed the camp is to remain as asylum accommodation for years, rather than months, stripping away their resources and their opportunities
An Executive Officer from the East Grinstead Sea Cadets, one of several local Cadet Forces who used the facilities at the Crowborough Military Barracks, wrote to Mims saying, ‘Contrary to government statements describing Crowborough as a disused facility, it was, in fact, actively used on a regular basis by local and national cadet units form all branches of the cadets. Closing access to this site has delivered a major blow to our young people, our children and our volunteers. The consequences for our cadets have been immediate and severe.’
Mims has asked the Minister for the opportunity to discuss this intensely disappointing situation, which is having a very real and detrimental impact on young cadets, current and future, locally, on site, with her neighbouring MP for Crowborough, Nus Ghani and the affected cadet teams.
