A global campaign, focused on ending violence against women, and organised by The National Committee of UN Women UK has been hosted by the Member of Parliament for Eastleigh, Mims Davies.
Commenting Mims said:
“As Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Women in Parliament, and as a former member of the Women and Equalities Committee, I am delighted to have been able to host UN Women UK in Parliament and bring their #drawaline campaign to Parliament.”
“A shocking statistic says that 1 in 4 women in the UK are likely to be affected by violence. As we look ahead to Christmas, and to spending time with our loved ones, we must also recognise the struggles that too many women face, often unnoticed, and take action to reduce this statistic.
“I am therefore hugely grateful that so many of my colleagues from across the political spectrum took the time to support this event, and I will be writing to the Prime Minister asking if she too will support this campaign, as she was visiting our troops in Iraq today. ”
#drawaline is UN Women's global campaign to end violence against women, running from the 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10th December (World Human Rights Day) and represents 16 days of action. We are asking governments, parliaments, local authorities, businesses and a host of civic society organisations as well as individuals throughout the UK to draw an orange line to show their support for this vital campaign - this will include drawing a physical line through the streets of London, around the UK using billboards, and around the world with buildings illuminated in orange.
The #drawaline campaign contributes to the wider UN 2030 Sustainable Development goals and relates to Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5) in particular. SDG 5 is formed of 9 underlying targets, the second of which is to “eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation”.
