As part of the Parliament Week 2017 events, Eastleigh MP, Mims Davies, delivered a ‘Life in Parliament’ interactive session to fifteen level 3 OCR Diploma in Business Administration students at Eastleigh College who are currently studying legislation. As well as an overview of a typical day in the life of an MP and a question and answer session, Mims ran a voting scenario, which students participated in, of how legislation is proposed and voted on in the Commons Chamber so students were able to extend their understanding not only of the process but of the ceremony associated with the voting process.
Mims said :
“I thoroughly enjoy meeting with students and youth groups locally to discuss not only the purpose and structure of our Parliament but to give them an insight into how legislation is passed. The students I met to today posed some very challenging questions and I welcomed their enthusiasm for quizzing their local MP.”
She continued:
“I’ve run several similar sessions across the constituency since being elected in 2015 and I am always delighted with the response I receive and the understanding young people have about parliament.”
Jackie Beavis, course leader from Eastleigh College, said:
“This was a great opportunity for my students to get that first-hand experience directly from Mims. I hope that this insight into how Parliament works will add that extra dimension to their current studies.”
