A comment on Mims' activities through the week and the latest news from Parliament.
It’s been another super busy week both in Westminster and in the constituency, with debates lasting long in to the night over the EU Withdrawal Bill, events in Parliament to mark Carers Week, announcements over long-term investment into our NHS and…running the Eastleigh 10K!
I am regularly in touch with many of you over the Brexit process, including updates on how our negotiations are progressing. Over the past couple of weeks we have been debating hundreds of Amendments to legislation. Some of those Amendments have demonstrated the important role that the House of Lords continues to play within our democracy, while we as an elected body have chosen to overturn others. As Eastleigh’s MP, I remain committed to ensuring that we deliver on the result of the referendum and leave the EU, the Customs Union and the Single Market. If you would like me to keep you updated or have any questions do email me at mims.davies.mp@parliament.uk .
In previous columns I have spoken of my support for carers, and I was delighted to welcome the Government’s ‘Carers Action Plan’ ahead of Carers Week which took place from the 11th to the 17th June. Having cared for my own family members, met with many local carers both old and young, and as former Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Carers, I am particularly pleased that the Government is moving forward with my proposals to give working carers paid leave. This will make a real difference to the millions of people across the UK performing caring duties for their loved ones and is a further demonstration of the Government caring for our carers.
I also know just how important the NHS is to many of you reading this column, and I hope that, like me, you will welcome the Government’s long-term plan for the NHS announced by the Prime Minister, which includes an extra £20 billion a year by 2023. This extra cash - which comes as the NHS marks 70 years since it was formed - will mean more doctors, more nurses and extra support for all of the AMAZING NHS staff already working in our hospitals, GP surgeries and within our communities.
Supporting us all to keep fit and live healthier lifestyles is something that the NHS remains committed to as it saves lives as well as countless millions of pounds. It was therefore great to be joined by SO many people for this year’s Eastleigh 10k! I’ve written before of my love of running - having previously taken part in the London Marathon raising over £1500 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and Wessex Heartbeat – and while my training sessions hadn’t been quite as regular as I had hoped for, I still really enjoyed the event; meeting new people, catching-up with friends from my local running club and enjoying our local scenery. My thanks again to all of the organisers, helpers, supporters and marshals without whom this event – now in its 34th year – wouldn’t be able to take place!
Wishing you all a great weekend…I will be busy training for my next running engagement on Sunday, this time at Southampton Airport! I’ll report back next week!
