The Member of Parliament for Eastleigh, Mims Davies has welcomed an announcement by the Prime Minister Theresa May confirming that an inquiry will be launched into the contaminated blood scandal of the 1970’s and 80’s.
Commenting Mims said:
“I am so pleased that the Prime Minister has made this announcement and that there will be a full and wide-ranging inquiry into the tragedy. Vitally, this inquiry will be drawn together by the victims, to support and suit the victims, finally giving them a voice—the strongest voice possible—so that they can get the most and the fullest answers they can, which is what they deserve.”
“Like many of my parliamentary colleagues I have been contacted by constituents who have told me about their experiences and about how contaminated blood has affected them, their family life and their friends. Every so often as a constituency MP, we meet the saddest constituents who tell us the most heartbreaking stories, but they are not stories for the victims—they are daily life. These are wrecked lives, but the people have done nothing wrong of their own accord—it is pure injustice.”
“One of those constituents is Gary Webster from Bishopstoke, who has been left coping with HIV, hepatitis C and possibly variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease as a result of the NHS blood products that were used during a routine procedure in the 1980s to treat his haemophilia.”
“I am pleased to have been able to attend a number of debates in the Commons Chamber on behalf of Gary as well as other constituents, including to welcome the Prime Ministers announcement of an inquiry into this injustice earlier this week. I have also made representations to Ministers regarding the ongoing support - financial or otherwise - for the victims of this scandal, and will continue with this work.”
Concluding her statement, the Prime Minister, Theresa May outlined her determination to stand up for victims and confront injustice and unfairness in our society at every turn, confirming that the Government will work with the victims and their families to decide what form this inquiry should take so that their voices are heard and they finally get the answers and justice they have spent decades waiting for.
