My hopeful optimism that it would be a quiet start to this scorching week in Westminster were promptly dashed by the PM acquiescing to the lack of confidence from his party. Our country desperately needs leadership that is clear, decisive, and that can meet the moment. On defence, the economy and cost of living this is all sorely lacking.
From attacking our working farms to destroying small businesses, people across Britain are being left to pick up the pieces of these punitive policies.
But let us not forget that this is not just a Sir Keir Starmer problem - it is a Labour Party problem. Their decisions have led us here and were made by an ill-prepared government, not an individual alone. A new individual potentially leap-frogging into No 10 after a single by-election is quite a sight to witness.
Therefore, Britain now needs a new direction, one that supports businesses large and small and takes our defence seriously – and the only party that can work for everyone in every corner of our nation is the Conservative and Unionist Party under Kemi Badenoch MP.
Regardless of these wider political machinations my focus is always my day job as your Member of Parliament; and whoever is in Number 10 in the coming weeks - we will hold them to account as the official opposition.
I meanwhile was granted an Urgent Question last week on grooming gangs and the progress of the independent inquiry. I know from my inbox this is an issue my constituents deeply care about. One year on from Dame Louise Casey’s review, concerns remain about institutional blindness and the pace of justice.
In the Chamber, I raised the distressing experiences of survivors and pressed ministers on early release and public confidence. I voted for amendments to legislation preventing the most vile and dangerous criminals from being released early. Sadly, the Government voted these measures down and we are seeing the consequences of that.
This is about justice for victims and ensuring the system reflects the seriousness of these crimes. Survivors must be heard, and meaningful action, not words, must follow.
This commitment to listening was also central to my visit to the Women in Community Pharmacy event. 1.6 million consultations take place every day across the country. Thanks to all our incredibly local pharmacies for the important work in our area.
Take the HPV vaccine, expanded under our Government, and part-delivered by pharmacies, has resulted in zero deaths from cervical cancer for women under the age of 24 for the first time.
Economic opportunities are key to our long-term success both individually and our country. At a recent ABTA event to discuss outbound travel. With Gatwick expanding nearby, this vital sector underpins many local jobs and opportunities.
It drives growth, supports employment and business connects us globally. As families look ahead to the summer, it is essential we support this industry and understand the pressures it faces and frankly this government should scrap the looming tourism tax. This will help no-one including one key local employer the Caravan and Motorhome Club.
