I’ve been thinking of all those who have been affected by this nearby derailment near Lewes. Whilst I’m very pleased to see the Oxted and Uckfield services back running again following repairs, I’m extremely aware there is much more to do. With 150 on board including several staff, reports of recent ‘rough/bumpy rides’ it is vital we get to the bottom of what has happened. We are so lucky no very significant injuries beyond broken bones occurred, but it was a huge shock to all and much to learn.
Thanks to constituents who are emailing me with their experiences over the last few days and weeks. Please do bring water with you if you have to use the trains and dress comfortably if you can with appropriate footwear as I’m hearing there’s a lot of standing passengers and much longer journeys too as investigations continue and disruption continue.
I’ve met with the Minister for Rail on Monday with fellow MPs discussing the derailment where I shared your views and experiences, raised further questions, and insight from passengers in particular from my constituents in Cooksbridge. This worrying incident is affecting a vital Sussex line and is a major concern to all who use this crucial rail line affecting those travelling home, to the coast, and to events.
We greatly thank all who have assisted on site, all our amazing emergency services once again for stepping up and rushing to assist. Huge thanks to all those who were helping get people from the scene swiftly and supporting all the affected passengers and train crew.
It was fantastic to join the official opening of the East Grinstead Banking Hub after lots of hard work getting it in place and to see this important service now available to local residents. With our Uckfield long term site coming on too. More on this soon.
While online banking has brought many benefits, we must make sure people who need face-to-face support are not forgotten. For older residents, vulnerable customers, and those who run local businesses, charities, and community organisations, having somewhere they can speak to a real person and pay in cash can make a huge difference.
As the local MP, one of the most important parts of my role is listening to the people I represent here in East Grinstead, Uckfield, and the villages.
I was recently door knocking in Buxted, meetings in Pease Pottage, and at events and surgeries – I’m doing this across the Summer all over our area. I will be near you over the next few weeks, and I look forward to chatting. Whatever the issue from local services, transport, infrastructure, the environment or the cost pressures facing families and businesses, good representation starts with listening.

My petition is declaring the Copthorne Hotel to be returned to its former use as a major local employer, valuable Gatwick Airport accommodation and a highly valued community hub, in line with the Mid Sussex District Council motion passed in September 2025.
