Middy Column 9th June

What a fantastic Platinum Jubilee celebration for our magnificent Queen, we had all across Mid Sussex! It was great to meet and see so many people enjoying these organised events. A huge well done and thank you goes to all organisers of the many brilliant events and street parties that were held.

I was very pleased to see Warden Park Secondary Academy and Harlands Primary School were awarded money from the latest ‘Condition Improvement Fund’ via DFE. They are benefitting from a share of  £498 million which was allocated for 1,405 projects. This fund helps address issues such as poor building conditions and energy efficiency to keep local schools in good condition for students to do well in their learning.

Last week was ‘Volunteers Week’, there are so many brilliant organisations in Mid Sussex who only exist due to the hard work of volunteers. So often we overlook the fact people regularly give up their time to offer services and activities that benefit us and our families. A huge thank you to all the volunteers out there helping in so many ways, you are very much appreciated.

This week in Parliament we see the Second Reading of the National Security Bill. This would replace existing counter-espionage laws with a comprehensive framework for countering hostile state activity  and updates the counter-terrorism framework. Also the Second Reading of the Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill. The Bill introduces extensive measures such as new statutory requirements regarding delivering the levelling-up ‘missions' and goals. It enhances local devolution, will focus on improving and supporting high streets which is vital for Mid Sussex and will overhaul for better the planning system and this legislation is vital to get right. ‘Levelling Up’ is not a merely catchy phrase but a commitment to help everyone progress not matter the geography and needs to work for the South East and the whole of the land.

Good luck to all students taking their exams, I wish you all the best and thank all the teachers who have helped you to be confident and ready for these.
