On Friday evening, the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, joined local MP Mims Davies for an event in Hedge End where he spoke about his journey through Westminster, his priorities as Home Secretary and why Brexit was already being actioned.
The discussion in the Eastleigh constituency – which voted 52.5% to leave the EU – came ahead of the Immigration and Social Security Co-Ordination (EU Withdrawal) Bill receiving its Second Reading in the House of Commons this week.
Commenting on the visit, Eastleigh MP Mims Davies said:
“Having previously supported the Home Secretary during his time as Communities Secretary, I was delighted to welcome him to Hedge End and join friends to listen to him talk about his time in politics, his roles in Government and his priorities as Home Secretary.
“Immigration is a key issue for many of my constituents who want to see a fair approach taken to this issue once we have left the EU, and it was great to hear that this is exactly what the Home Secretary is looking to deliver. A system that takes in to account the skills that you have, rather than where you come from, while recognising the contribution of EU families already living in the UK.
“I have said on many occasions that whether in the Home Office, at DEFRA or at my Department DCMS we are seeing Brexit in action, ensuring that we deliver on the result of the referendum and the issues that the vote covered. This includes immigration and I share the Home Secretary’s enthusiasm for the immigration white paper and what it represents – a fairer system delivering for all.”
The event, organised by Eastleigh Conservatives, took place at the Southern Parishes Conservative Club on Friday evening, and attracted people from across the south who came to meet the Home Secretary as well as local MP Mims Davies and local Conservative Councillors.
