Mims Davies MP has declared her support for this Private Member’s Bill which would introduce unpaid Carer’s Leave for those juggling unpaid care alongside paid employment.
The Bill will receive its second reading in the House on 9th September and has cross-party support, including from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Carers. The Bill is also being supported by carers’ organisations such as Carers UK, forward thinking employers, employer-representative groups like the CIPD, as well as trade unions, demonstrating widespread support on this vitally important issue.
Commenting, Mims said: “As a former carer and someone whose family were affected by disablement and very long-term illness, I truly understand the challenges family carers can face trying to juggle unpaid care alongside balancing paid employment. I am therefore delighted to support this Bill. This is an important manifesto commitment to deliver which this parliamentary vehicle could land with suitable Government backing. I will be watching it with interest as many of my constituents are keen to see this come forward.”
She continues, “This is a key opportunity which could provide dedicated new employment rights to millions of carers for the very first time, helping them to balance remaining in employment and to be better supported in the crucial caring role they play. As a former vice chair of the APPG and due to my long-standing support of Carer’s UK I am keen to do all I can to help progress this important bill alongside my colleagues.”
