Mims Davies MP was delighted join the South of England Farming Conference.
This year's conference took a different approach of an interview with two knowledgeable guests rather than presentations - discussing whether they can save the planet, from a farming perspective, or if it’s too late. Finalised with a Q&A from the audience.
We know a network of small abattoirs around the country are crucial to farmers and the rural economy - but they face challenges and that is why last month Defra announced we will be launching a fund for small abattoirs, to open by the end of the year. Defra unveils £4m small abattoir fund to help struggling sector
The fund will provide £4 million to support the smaller abattoir sector to improve productivity, enhance animal health and welfare, add value to primary products, and encourage innovation and investment in new technology.
The Government is also working closely with industry through a small abattoir working group and task and finish group, which is exploring opportunities to cut red tape for smaller abattoirs.
The announcement was welcomed by the sector, e.g. the NFU described it as 'positive news' and we continue to monitor and listen to the sector more widely, including larger abattoirs.
A huge thank you to Stephen D Lawrence of Southern News and Pictures Ltd for the brilliant photographs.
