Mims Davies MP is pleased to be raising awareness for Flood Action Week.
The Environment Agency is running its annual Flood Awareness Week taking place on 20th - 26th November 2023.
We have all seen from the storms of recent weeks, such as Storm Ciarán, how important it is to know the risks of flooding and prepare for flooding. This was only too evident during the last few weeks. According to the Met Office, Storm Babet saw the third-wettest independent three-day period in a series for England and Wales since 1891, while the Midlands provisionally recorded its wettest ever three-day period.
You can sign up for flood warnings here and take crucial steps to prepare for what to do in a flood as it can significantly reduce:
- risk to life
- damage to property
- the suffering from mental health impacts in the future.
Around 5.5 million homes and businesses in England are at risk of flooding and climate change is only increasing the dangers. It is clear we are already seeing the impacts of the climate crisis around the world and in the UK through wetter winters and hotter, drier summers. This campaign has simple messages such as ‘knowing just one action to take that can reduce the effects on your home and family, and even save a life’.
Mims Davies MP said:
"It's crucial to be aware of the steps you can take to protect yourself and loved ones during a flood.
Reducing the risk to life, mental health, and damage to your property can be helped by being prepared for these extreme weather conditions.
Nearly 100,000 properties were protected as part of the Environment Agency’s response to the flooding caused by Storm Babet recently, while its flood warning service sent out more than 300,000 messages by email, telephone and text."
