Mims Davies, Member of Parliament for Mid Sussex, is supporting this year’s national Dementia Action Week, helping to raise awareness about dementia and dementia diagnosis.
There are thousands of people who are in the dark about their diagnosis as many don’t know the signs to spot. Dementia Action Week 2023, which is the Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest and longest running awareness campaign, is taking place this week (15-21 May), and is focussing on the importance of dementia diagnosis, reminding people that symptoms such as memory loss are not a natural part of ageing.
It is estimated that there are over 11,000 people currently living with dementia in Mid Sussex and an estimated one million people will be living with dementia by 2025. Therefore, research is crucial to understanding the condition and improving outcomes for those affected.
In 2019, Mims was proud to stand on a manifesto that committed to doubling dementia research funding and finding a cure for dementia. You can read more about that here: https://www.mimsdavies.org.uk/news/mims-davies-mp-mid-sussex-highlights-benefits-early-diagnosis-dementia
Locally, Mims has been working in partnership several charities to help make the towns and villages in Mid Sussex more dementia-friendly and to raise awareness about the support available in the areas.
Having watched my Dad suffer from early-onset dementia due to a head injury, I am proud to support Dementia Action Week. This annual week sees people across the UK take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.
In the meantime, Mims is encouraging everyone across Mid Sussex to take up the chance to train as a Dementia Friend, which will help you learn more about what it is like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into support for those living with Dementia.
