The West Sussex Gigabit project is about improving the infrastructure that will allow our public services to be delivered more effectively for all local residents and tax payers.
Together with CityFibre, West Sussex councils are building a full fibre network that will connect key public sector sites, capable of delivering speeds from 1,000 megabits per second (1 gigabit) to meet the future need of public services.
Mims Davies MP comments:
“I have been reaching out to ministerial colleagues DCMS to highlight villages in Mid Sussex are in need of better internet connection.
“With hybrid working it is even more important to make sure all the villages and houses have a strong internet connection. The ‘top up’ funding the national UK Gigabit Voucher scheme does remains open to eligible communities and encourage all who are struggling to contact WSCC and see what help can be offered.”
The project will not deliver fibre broadband to homes and businesses, but West Sussex councils are committed to providing full fibre within the county by working with the market to benefit homes and businesses in the future.
Other projects are currently under way within the County Council that will extend the reach of fibre broadband to more premises across the county.
90 community projects are being supported by our ‘top up’ enabling around 13,000 additional homes and businesses to either directly receive a gigabit-capable connection or be able to do so if they wish in future. This represents an additional £12m in funding from DCMS and West Sussex Councils invested in gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure.
Communities that are already registered can continue to progress their projects subject to meeting the ‘top up’ eligibility criteria whilst funding remains. DCMS will award remaining funding on a first come, first served basis. New communities can no longer subscribe if they are not already registered with DCMS.
