The Member of Parliament for Eastleigh, Mims Davies, has been elected by colleagues as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Commercial Radio.
There are 340 licenced commercial radio stations in the UK, which produce over 3,000 hours of content per week. The purpose of the cross-party group is to consider and promote these stations in Westminster.
Mims said,
‘In Eastleigh we are lucky to have so many excellent commercial radio options – I often listen to Wave, Heart, and Capital radio stations whilst driving around the constituency – and it is so important that stations such as these are given a platform to make their concerns known.’
‘Having had a career in Radio prior to becoming the MP for Eastleigh, I am absolutely delighted to be now leading this Parliamentary group. I’ve presented, researched, and programmed radio shows – dealing with everything from music to news to travel updates, so it is a pleasure to make use of these experiences here in Westminster.’
‘I’m looking forward to an exciting programme of events across the year ahead and to working with the industry body for commercial radio in the UK, Radiocentre, whom I have already had meetings with this week to discuss the best agenda moving forward.’
Having previously had the opportunity to serve as PPS to the Minister for Digital and Culture, Matt Hancock MP, Mims will now continue to utilise her familiarity with the Radio Industry through this role.
