Eastleigh MP and longstanding equalities supporter Mims Davies has today spoken of her delight at plans announced by the Prime Minister ahead of the 2018 Pride season which will see the Government take concrete steps to improve the lives of LGBT people across the country.
Commenting the Eastleigh MP Mims Davies said:
“This is a really exciting announcement. Last week we heard from the Equalities Minister that further to my lobbying the consultation on the Gender Recognition Act 2004 will be introduced this summer. I am delighted that the Prime Minister will now also take action to ensure that everybody feels not only able to express who they are and who they love, but take pride in that.
“For me that message, not just accepting who you are and who you love, but being proud of it and celebrating it is one of the key messages that should come out of Pride events as they take place across the country this summer, and it is why I have always been so keen for Eastleigh to host its very own Pride event. I couldn’t be more excited knowing that Eastleigh will be doing exactly that on September 8th this year.
“Last Thursday we marked International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in Parliament and recognised that while we have come a long way, there remains a great deal left to do, and that was why the Government launched its consultation for the LGBT community – which received over 100,000 responses – and why it is taking this really welcome action.
“There can be no doubt about this Government’s continued commitment to supporting our LGBTI community, both here in the UK as well as around the world, and I look forward to continuing to work with Ministers and constituents in the coming months and years to ensure that we all continue to progress together.”
