Last Friday saw my inaugural Jobs Fair held at Haywards Heath college. With over 60 stands and more than 300 people attending, plus students from the college popping in between learning. It was a great way to connect local businesses and people looking for a new career or sector and those looking to re-enter the workplace to find the support to get a job. Thank you to the businesses, DWP Jobcentre Plus, jobseekers and to all those who worked hard to make this a real success. I was delighted to see interviews on the day, work trials booked and so many contacts made. If you attended and subsequently moved into work, please do let me know. My next event is being planned for March next year and we will keep you updated.
Last week I joined BBC Radio Sussex to talk about the importance of local radio, and I expressed my great disappointment about the BBC’s proposals to make extensive cuts to its local radio output. As a former employee, I know personally how worried and upset many are. BBC Radio Sussex and BBC Radio Surrey are tremendous assets to our community in brilliantly covering local issues. I emphasised the need for a rethink. I’m raising this with the relevant Minister at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport as we await to hear more from the BBC about how this is actually work without diminishing its distinctiveness and charter obligations and not chasing the same type of output as others.
