Last week began with a vote on whether to accept the findings of the Privileges Committee ‘s report on the conduct of Boris Johnson. I voted to support its recommendations as I believe we must back Parliament and its processes. I know my constituents made tremendous personal sacrifices during the pandemic to keep our community safe and I hope the outcome of the vote provides closure.
Over six million disabled people began to receive a £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment which I was pleased to sign in my ministerial role at the DWP. Payments will be made automatically over two-week period between 20 June and 4 July 2023. Anyone in receipt of certain disability benefits on 1 April 2023 is entitled to the payment. One-off disability cash forms part of a wider support package worth up to £1,350 for the most vulnerable.
The Government also announced plans to bring forward legislation to ensure people in care homes and hospitals will be able to have visitors in all circumstances. The Government is seeking views from patients, care home residents, and their families on visiting restrictions. Participate here: https://t.ly/jpjT
Recently, South East Water advised that the recent prolonged dry weather has meant we are using more water than normal. I have repeatedly raised my constituents' concerns about water security in our area, both with South East Water and with DEFRA Ministers, including Minister Pow. Please be assured, I will continue to engage with Ministers on this extremely concerning matter alongside highlighting, yet again, the impact of increasing demand from high numbers of new housing expectations placed not only on Mid Sussex but across the whole of the South East.
July is also Group B Strep Awareness Month. Although group B Strep infection can make your baby very unwell, with prompt treatment most babies will recover fully. Find out more by heading to @groupbstrepsupport.
Finally, this weekend is #ukindieday and I am encouraging constituents to get out and support our fantastic array of independent shops in Mid Sussex. So, please, if you can, shop locally this Independents' Day weekend.
