There are still too many preventable suicides occurring each year so the launch of the new Government’s National Suicide Prevention Strategy by fellow Sussex MP and Minister Maria Caulfield is a very welcome measure which aims to reduce England’s heart-breaking rate within 2.5 years. This cross-government strategy has 100 actions to be taken to ensure anyone experiencing a crisis has access to the urgent support needed. Often the hardest thing to do is ask for help, please do call the Samaritans on 116-123 or 0800 0309 500 to reach the 24/7 Sussex Mental Health Crisis Helpline.
Meanwhile, a national online survey has been launched to gather vital data on women’s menstrual health, contraception, pregnancy planning and menopause. I encourage women in Mid Sussex to take part in the survey which will help shape future policy. You can take part via the link on my website.
National Eye Health Week is 18-24 September - a crucial week in ensuring that everyone understands the importance of good eye health and the need for regular eye tests for all. 2 million people in the UK are living with sight loss severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives, half of which is avoidable. Regular eye tests are key to detect early signs of treatable conditions like glaucoma and can detect other health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.
It was great to take part in the inaugural East Grinstead Food Trail, visiting some of the showcased hospitality venues, meeting and chatting to owners and staff and of course sampling the delightful food and drink tastings on offer. Visit egbee.co.uk for more details as this has been extended for another week.
It’s very disappointing to see train services for East Grinstead continuing to be unacceptably poor. I’ve raised this with both the Rail Minister and GTR and stressed the need to work to achieve parity with the Brighton mainline for those studying and working especially with the impact of ULEZ. I’ll bring the Trains Minister to East Grinstead shortly to hear directly from livid commuters and to help get this resolved.
