Statement from Mims Davies MP: For Immediate Use: (18th September 2018, 19:00)
After former Bursledon Parish Council Chairman, Mark McCormick, pleads guilty to raping a teenager and other child sex offences:
"My heart and thanks goes out to the brave victims - many of them still youngsters - who came forward to tell their stories about the actions of this evil and dangerous sexual predator who was well known in Bursledon and in a position of trust.
"His despicable crimes have shocked the local community and feelings are understandably running high today. It’s quite clear McCormick now faces a substantial time in prison for his appalling conduct. This is something that must be a relief to all his victims and their loved ones.
"I would also like to thank Hampshire police for the work they have done to investigate and bring to court this complex case.
"There are questions to be answered as to why this man was able to be in the heart of the community for so long and commit these awful crimes.
"However, that is something that must be addressed in the future. Right now, we should be pleased Mark McCormick is off the streets and a danger no more."
