Today, on Ukraine’s Independence Day, our thoughts are with all Ukrainians, and the British-Ukrainian community.
This day carries special importance to all Ukrainians, not only commemorating independence from the former Soviet Union but also marking 18 months since the beginning of Russia’s immoral and illegal invasion.
To mark the occasion, local MP for Mid Sussex, Mims Davies attended a Sports Camp for Ukrainian children hosted by The Change Foundation and organised by HUGS4Ukraine. The event welcomed Ukrainian refugees, their hosts, their friends and neighbours, and volunteers and community organisations who have played a significant role in supporting the community throughout their journey.
Britain recognises the bravery, resilience and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people defending their homeland from Russian brutality.
Ukrainian independence means so much for the world. Not only is Ukraine fighting for its sovereignty, it is also fighting for us all, defending the international rules-based order and its underpinning principles.
On this important day, Mims reaffirmed that the UK will support Ukraine for as long as it takes to resolve this conflict on its own terms. Britain and our partners will not waver. Like Ukraine, we remain confident that brighter days are ahead.
To the many thousands of Ukrainian refugees in Britain - including scores in Mid Sussex- Slava Ukraini!
Commenting, Mims Davies MP, said:
I have been overwhelmed with the generosity of the people of Mid Sussex who have opened their hearts and their homes to Ukrainians since the start of the conflict 18 months ago . We all remember the horror of when the news broke and our minds instantly turned to the people of Ukraine who were caught up in the conflict which is why I am pleased to see so many people in our towns and villages come together and mark the day with the people of Ukraine.
Today's Sports Camp for Ukrainian children sends a very clear message to everybody here and across Mid Sussex that we stand with Ukraine. And we must ensure that we work together to bring this dreadful war to an end. So people who are celebrating today here in this country can go home and this time next year, celebrate at home.
