Eastleigh MP Mims Davies is urging local people to have their say over plans to reduce borough councillor numbers and change ward boundaries in the constituency.
Draft proposals from the Local Government Boundary Commission ARE looking at having 39 councillors, down from the present 44. The reduction will take place when the whole council is up for election in 2018.
“This is an important change and one that local people should look closely and fully at, as it goes to the heart of our local democracy and how people are represented,” said Mims.
“My personal view is to keep the boundaries as they are but perhaps reduce the number of councillors to one per ward. This could significantly lower the cost of politics in Eastleigh, getting better value for the taxpayer, through less allowances, expenses and the amount of costly elections and would be welcome in these times of financial constraints.”
“Our next door authority, Winchester City Council, has just elected a much smaller number of councillors after making boundary changes, so any new system can and will work, if it’s implemented. I urge people to look at this document and have their say.”
