Mims Davies, MP for Eastleigh, has chaired a seminar for the Westminster Employment Forum, titled ‘Priorities for the New Careers Strategy – next steps for standards, funding and meeting employer needs.’
Mims said,
‘I was delighted to Chair this important event that seriously looked at the challenges faced by the UK’s employers and requirements from Government to manage the needs of a changing jobs and careers sector.’
‘The UK economy’s continued success is built on the flexibility of our labour market, which benefits both workers and businesses, and it is important that we continue to nurture this for the future.’
‘Insights from this event will definitely provide food-for-thought as I engage with SMEs and bigger businesses in the Eastleigh constituency.’
‘The speakers today have been experts in their field, and it has been very interesting to hear their response to the Secretary of State’s recent call for a “skills revolution”. The issues surrounding productivity, social mobility, the skills agenda, Brexit and changing technology were all widely explored.’
‘I was particularly glad to raise my own views on flexible working practices, which, as a mother and as a former carer, I passionately believe must be supported by the rapidly developing technology sector.’
The event featured a keynote address from Barbara Bassot, a senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, on the ‘Current National Picture for Careers and Challenges Ahead’, and contributors included Jan Ellis, Chief Executive of the Career Development Institute, Joe Billington, Director of the National Careers Service.
