Eastleigh MP, Mims Davies, is promoting Drowning Prevention Week as we enter the summer and more people are having fun on or near the water.
Drowning Prevention Week, the national campaign run by The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), aims to ensure everyone knows how to have fun and stay safe near water. This year running from 15 to 25 June, the campaign will see hundreds of leisure centres, schools, businesses and youth groups utilising RLSS UK’s water safety resources in their communities.
Over 700 people lose their life to drowning in the UK each year, including 75 British Citizens abroad, and many more have near drowning experiences, some of which are life changing.
Mims says,
“As the summer approaches and the weather is better, it is incredibly important for people who are using the River Hamble, the River Itchen, or who are out on the Solent, to remember that safety is paramount, and this is why I am supporting and promoting Drowning Prevention Week.
“I recently visited Hamble Lifeboat Station to learn about the vital rescue work they do in our local area, but I know that this summer an ounce of prevention will be worth a pound of cure, so I strongly urge my constituents to have fun, but stay safe.”
Di Steer, RLSS UK’s Chief Executive, said:
“We urge as many people as possible to just spend a bit of time making sure they know how to stay safe near water. Most of us are generally aware of the hazards at the beach but tend to overlook dangers closer to home like water temperature, sudden changes in depth or hidden debris. A few simple steps are all it takes to prevent a tragedy.”
“We need everyone’s help to raise awareness about the reality of accidental drowning, and we’re delighted that Mims Davies is supporting us in our efforts.”
