Last Tuesday the Houses of Parliament were again shaken by what is suspected to be a terror attack. While I wasn’t in London at the time, my team were, and I’d like to thank the emergency services for all of their hard work to keep our Parliament safe. I'd also like to acknowledge the tremendous support provided by the tour, security, retail, maintenance, IT and catering staff in Westminster who persevered through such a shocking event. I wish all involved a full recovery.
Work enables all of us to shape our destinies, and that is why I am SO proud that unemployment is now at its lowest level since 1975! Meanwhile, confirmation that there are over 730,000 job vacancies is great news for our younger people and returners, with youth unemployment down by 45% since 2010!
Last week also saw students across our area and thousands of others all over the UK collect their A-Level and BTEC results. My HUGE congratulations to all of those who, having collected their results, can start an exciting new chapter in their lives. I have always believed that, whatever your background, whatever your results, if you work hard and believe in yourself, you will succeed and make your dreams a reality. For many young people across our area, this is their opportunity to do exactly that! Thank you to all at Barton Peveril and Eastleigh College for their amazing work supporting our students.
On Saturday last week I had a great time out and about knocking on doors with local Conservative Councillor Steven Broomfield and some of my local Conservative team. Unsurprisingly Brexit was a key theme during our countless conversations, with the VAST majority of people we spoke to saying that they just want us to get on with it! Needless to say, as a Government Whip and as Eastleigh’s MP, I will continue to work hard to do exactly that. Brexit was far from the only thing to be raised on the doorstep though, with plenty of people taking time to stop me and very kindly thank me for my work within Government to improve animal welfare standards, stamp down on the Ivory Trade and reduce plastic usage. Genuine concerns were also raised with me over Eastleigh Borough Council’s proposed Local Plan, and I will continue to keep an eye on this key local issue and ensure that the concerns of local people are heard.
If you would like to get in touch to let me know what really matters to you, or if you’d be interested in joining my team on the doorsteps, please get in touch by sending me an email to mims.davies.mp@parliament.uk
In the meantime, wishing you all a really great weekend!
