The recent news regarding Matt Hancock MP, the now former Health Secretary, was of course deeply disappointing. We’ve all had to abide by difficult rules for a long time, often by making incredibly difficult sacrifices. Meanwhile, I can’t deny I am pleased to see my friend, the Rt Hon Sajid Javid, return to the Cabinet and become our new Health Secretary. I’m confident he will do an excellent job in this tough role at a very demanding time, as we continue our recovery from the pandemic and head to the next stage, all being well, next month. I have worked directly with him as Communities Secretary and I know what his experience, steadfast nature and capabilities bring. I was pleased to bump into him in Westminster on Monday as he was leaving the Chamber to have a brief, little catch up. People always stop in their tracks to speak to ‘the Saj’ and he is always happy to stop for a quick chat if he has the time. Now, he’s busy getting to grips with the new brief, in between chatting and listening to people, which is one of his great strengths.
Listening and acting are key to our roles in public service, which is why I met several constituents in Westminster and via Zoom on the recent ‘Travel Day of Action’ - who work in various different roles in the aviation and travel industries, to hear their thoughts on what further action the Government can take to support their recovery and I will be raising these with my colleagues. This has been an extremely worrying time for so many constituents and I’m determined to do all I can to support the recovery of Gatwick Airport, which is so crucial to so many constituents’ jobs, businesses and working lives.
Meanwhile, I enjoyed spending time in East Grinstead last Friday catching up with local business owners & employers, as well as to support the wonderful Chequer Mead Theatre with local Councillors & the Town Mayor. This venue has benefited from the DCMS Culture Recovery Fund – as a new round has opened. It was great to see how busy it was, there’s lots scheduled at the venue to book so do get down to visit, enjoy the great food and drinks choices and be entertained! More details on the Culture Recovery Fund are on my website
Finally, Haywards Heath Town Council have asked for people to nominate local individuals, groups or organisations for their Covid-19 Community Support Awards, who have gone above and beyond to help someone, or the community, during the previous lockdowns. The details are on their website, so please do nominate your stand out volunteers for recognition.
