I have been informed by Network Rail that, from Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 February 2022, Network Rail will be closing the Brighton Main Line in the section between Three Bridges and Brighton/Lewes for essential improvements.
During this work, train services will operate on diversion via Littlehampton and Horsham, as well as rail replacement bus services. The alternative travel arrangements that will be put in place will be similar to the February 2019 Three Bridges to Brighton closures. Supporting weekend work will take place before and after the main closures. National Rail will use the line closures to replace track, switches and crossings (the moveable sections of track that allow trains to switch paths) at Copyhold Junction, near Haywards Heath.
Unfortunately, closure will take place over West Sussex school half-term, but Network Rail have made assurances that an adequate number of buses will be made available for a replacement bus service.
Furthermore, Railtrack is launching a large-scale passenger communications campaign targeting all passengers affected by the line closures and this campaign will ensure passengers and businesses are fully aware of the closures, the impact on journeys, the alternative travel options available and the benefits the work will bring for the region.
Even though these essential improvements will present some inconveniences to Mid Sussex commuters, families and the general public, I do welcome National Rail’s plans to improve and modernise the infrastructure. I would meanwhile encourage those affected to regularly check Network Rail’s website for information and to participate in the campaign.
